Don’t you love the cool, crisp mornings of fall? Me, too. However, it’s not exactly what we get here in South Texas…sigh. But, we can make it feel more like fall with a cocktail that uses one of my favorite fall ingredients, apple cider.
Apple Cider Old-Fashioned
- 2 ounces apple cider (I like the unfiltered kind)
- Dash of bitters – Angostura Orange bitters is good here
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar (less if you don’t like sweet drinks)
- 2 ounces bourbon whiskey
- Apple slice and cinnamon stick for garnish (optional)
Put a teaspoon of brown sugar in the bottom of a highball glass, add apple cider and bitters and stir until sugar is dissolved. Add ice and pour in bourbon, stir. Garnish and serve.
What’s a fall drink without a snack? Kay came up with this easy spicy popcorn. The perfect accompaniment to this twist on a classic old-fashioned.
Spicy Popcorn
1 Bag Microwave Popcorn (pop according to package instructions)
I used Orville Redenbacher’s Naturals (less oil and salt)
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon of chipotle powder
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
Spray Olive Oil
Preheat oven 250 degrees.
Pop the popcorn and cool. Combine all spices in a bowl and mix. Spread popcorn on cookie sheet and spray with olive oil. Sprinkle spice mix over popcorn. Bake for 15 minutes, remove from oven and stir, bake a second time for 10 to 15 minutes.
Add more cayenne if you like it spicy!!!
Happy Fall! Enjoy and thanks for reading.
The cider old-fashioned sounds delicious! It’s really cold here in New England and the trees are beautiful. Not looking forward to turning the clocks back!
Enjoy the fall!
